This lesson is all about IELTS advantage disadvantage essay questions if you are told to evaluate whether the advantages of something outweigh the drawbacks. The topic of the essay which will be used for example is all about the trend to abroad live and work.
Take a look at the essay question we are going to analyse:
People are in possession of the freedom to work and live anywhere on earth as a result of development of communication technology and transportation.
Perform some advantages of the development outweigh the disadvantages?
Comprehending the Task
It is important to distinguish between this and one that asks you to discuss advantages and disadvantages but does not ask your opinion when you have this type of advantage disadvantage essay.
If you are asked “ which are the advantages and disadvantages of….. ” you aren’t being asked your opinion. You simply have to talk about the advantages and disadvantages.
You could repeat this in 2 body paragraphs – one discussing the positive points, the next discussing the negative points.
However, then you are being asked for your opinion and you must say which there are the most of – positive or negative impacts if you have the word “ outweigh ” or “ Will this trend have more positive or negative effects.
Then you may get your score reduced on ‘ Task Response ’ for not fully addressing the question if you do not do this.
Have a look at these examples:
People are in possession of the freedom to work and live anywhere in the world as a result of development of communication technology and transportation.
Which are the pros and cons with this trend?
This advantage disadvantage essay is certainly not asking for your opinion . You could simply write one paragraph on the advantages and another in the disadvantages. However, this one does:
People are in possession of the freedom to work and live anywhere on the planet because of the growth of communication technology and transportation.
Do the advantages with this development outweigh the disadvantages?
Will this do have more positive or negative impacts?
Writing your Thesis
Another point to be cautious of is utilizing the expressed word‘outweigh’. It’s quite common for IELTS students to get mixed up when the thesis is written by them statement, and actually say the exact opposite as to what they write when you look at the essay!
As an example, they will certainly say the drawbacks outweigh the huge benefits, but then give more benefits when you look at the essay. This makes no sense.
So if you are not sure you should use the word correctly, i would suggest not using it in this kind of IELTS advantage disadvantage essay. You are able to just say what your opinion is, such as the thesis when you look at the model answer:
i really believe that this has more benefits than drawbacks.
This may avoid any mistakes.
Planning and Organisation
After this you want to think of 3 ideas that are supporting . One for example side as well as 2 when it comes to other side.
So you will then have three body paragraphs , one with all the drawback / benefit and two with all the advantages / disadvantages.
It is common practice that is academic start with the opposing opinion to yours, to help you start with the point that you have one idea for.
As explained above, it’s very important, especially if you are seeking a band 7 or higher, that your opinion reflects what is in your essay. Therefore if sa >two is had by you benefits and one drawback .
My advice for these questions is always to write a paragraph about each side , and also make it clear when you look at the introduction essaywriter and conclusion which side outweighs the other (i.e. your opinion about whether there are many advantages or disadvantages).
This is a recent exam question:
in certain countries, governments are encouraging industries and businesses to maneuver to regional areas beyond your big cities. Perform some advantages for this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
Below are a few ideas:
- Introduce the topic by paraphrasing the statement , then give a opinion that is clear whether there are many advantages or disadvantages.
- Advantages – e.g. costs are reduced in regional areas; there is more space; prov >Disadvantages – e.g. greater availability of skilled workers in big cities; better transport and infrastructure; companies based in regional areas are further from their customers, prov >Conclude by summarizing your opinion in a different way.
